These masks have three layers, each serving a specific purpose, and are commonly used for personal protection in various settings, such as healthcare, daily commuting, and public spaces.

Components of a 3-Ply Face Mask with Melt-Blown Filter:

1. Outer Layer (Non-Woven Fabric):
   • The outer layer is usually made from a non-woven fabric, typically spun bond polypropylene. This layer serves as a barrier against larger particles, dust, and liquid droplets. It helps to keep particles from penetrating the mask from the outside.
2. Middle Layer (Melt-Blown Filter):
   • The key feature of these masks is the melt-blown filter layer. This is the critical middle layer responsible for filtering out fine particles, including bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. The melt-blown material is made by extruding molten plastic (usually polypropylene) through a fine mesh, creating fibers that form a dense, yet porous, filter. The melt-blown layer provides the highest filtration efficiency and can block particles as small as 0.3 microns, which includes many harmful pathogens like viruses.
3. Inner Layer (Soft Non-Woven Fabric):
   • The innermost layer is typically a soft, non-woven fabric that provides comfort when the mask is worn against the face. It also helps absorb moisture and sweat, ensuring comfort during extended use.

Most 3-ply masks are designed for single-use only and should be discarded after wearing them for a period of time or after exposure to contaminants. When wearing these masks for extended periods, comfort features like adjustable ear loops or nose clips can make a significant difference in fit and wearability.
